EXACTLY one month after renowned lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), was kidnapped along Auchi-Benin Road, the State Security Service (SSS) said yesterday that the mastermind of the crime had been arrested.
Deputy Director of State Services (DSS), Marilyn Ogar, said a combined team of the Nigerian Army and DSS operatives arrested Kelvin Prosper Oniarah, who is on the agencies’ wanted list.
Known as Kelvin Ibruvwe, the statement said he had been involved in other criminal activities, including kidnap, armed robbery, murder and terrorism, among others.
Ogar described Oniarah as “a notorious terrorist, kidnap kingpin and armed robber, who has been on the wanted list of security agencies, and masterminded the kidnap of Mike Ozekhome (SAN).”
Freedom, however, came the way of 119 awaiting trial inmates of Kirikiri Medium and Maximum Prisons, Lagos yesterday following their release by the Lagos Chief Judge, Justice Ayotunde Phillips.
The exercise, aimed at decongesting the prisons, was part of activities to mark the 2013/2014 Legal Year celebration of the Lagos State Judiciary, which saw 99 inmates secure freedom from the medium security prison while 20 were released from the maximum security prison.
Those released include an armed robbery suspect, Innocent Nwokoro and two brothers, Dare and Dada Egbebunmi, said to have spent 13 years awaiting trials.
Senior members of the Lagos State Judiciary accompanied the chief judge to the prisons.
